MSc Information Technology
Entrepreneur
With a solid background in Computer Science and Information Security, I was looking for a programme that could bring together my technical knowledge with the practical demands of the UK’s tech industry.

UWS London stood out because of its reputation for fostering innovation and its location in a global city where technology meets commerce. I chose the MSc Information Technology programme to round out my expertise, expecting a curriculum that was not just theoretical but deeply connected to industry standards.

My studies at UWS London were instrumental in shaping how I approach professional problem-solving. The programme pushed me beyond coding and security protocols, helping me develop a broader view of IT management.

The collaborative learning environment allowed me to sharpen my communication skills, something I now realise is just as critical as technical ability. Particularly when explaining cybersecurity risks to non-technical business owners. The UK job market is a unique environment that values both standardisation and innovation. My experience taught me that while competition is high, the market is genuinely welcoming to those who bring a blend of strong technical skills and professional confidence. I understood early on that I needed to start positioning myself while still studying, focusing on how my global perspective could be applied to solve local business challenges.

The turning point for me was moving away from a general CV and beginning to tailor each application to highlight my specific skill set across cybersecurity, web development, and digital marketing. The path to self-employment is rarely straightforward. There were certainly moments of doubt, especially when navigating the nuances of UK business culture. However, I maintained a growth mindset throughout, treating every rejection as useful information to improve my approach.

My motivation remained strong because I saw my work not simply as a job, but as a mission to help secure the digital future of small businesses. Today, I run a freelance operation providing IT and cybersecurity support to startups. I work as a modern AI and cybersecurity trainer, helping businesses integrate new tools safely and confidently. What I am most proud of is being able to support entrepreneurs who previously felt overwhelmed by technology. My long-term goal is to continue making cybersecurity knowledge accessible to everyone, ensuring that in an increasingly digital world, no one is left vulnerable.

My advice to current and prospective UWS London students is to embrace proactive networking and not wait until graduation to engage with the industry. The UK market values those who show initiative and a willingness to adapt. Focus on building your personal brand and refining your communication skills. Being technically strong is important, but being able to communicate clearly and confidently is what makes you truly indispensable.

Study Tips

During my studies, I found that staying curious and connecting theory to practice made the biggest difference. A few approaches that worked well for me include bridging the theory gap by applying module assignments to real-world scenarios or live projects, which helps the learning stick and strengthens your portfolio.

It’s also important to master time management by balancing technical labs with consistent research and avoiding leaving documentation or coursework until the last minute. Engaging in peer review is equally valuable, as collaborating with classmates and explaining complex concepts to others is one of the best ways to confirm your own understanding.

Additionally, make full use of university resources such as digital journals and campus software, as these are often overlooked.

Finally, staying curious is essential—technology evolves rapidly, so supplementing your studies with industry blogs and keeping up with developments in AI and cybersecurity will help you stay ahead.

Career Tips

Aligning with UK industry standards is essential, so make sure your work and CV reflect recognised professional frameworks, as this signals credibility and creates a strong first impression.

It’s also important to develop a broad skill set—having deep expertise in one area, alongside a working knowledge of related fields like AI and digital marketing, gives you a clear advantage in today’s market. Perfecting your pitch is equally valuable; practice explaining how your technical skills solve real business problems, since demonstrating how cybersecurity can save a company money is far more persuasive than simply listing qualifications.

Being active on LinkedIn can further boost your prospects by helping you connect with professionals in the London tech scene, engage with their content, and build visibility before you even graduate.

Finally, focus on innovation by showing employers and clients that you are not just following instructions, but actively seeking ways to improve systems and deliver lasting value.
