Introduction

Course overview

The Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) Computing Studies is designed for students who want to build a strong foundation in computing and develop the practical skills needed to succeed in today’s digital world.

The course combines academic development with essential computing knowledge in programming, computer systems, networking, web development, mathematics, and cyber security or data analysis. Whether you are beginning your higher education journey, returning to study, or looking to develop new digital skills, this programme provides a supportive pathway into university-level computing.

Throughout the course, you will develop academic confidence alongside practical technical skills through lectures, workshops, laboratory sessions, and collaborative learning. On successful completion, you will be well prepared to progress to Year 2 of either the BEng (Hons) Cyber Security or BSc (Hons) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme at UWS London, subject to progression requirements.

During the course, you’ll:

  • Build a strong foundation in computing systems, programming and networking
  • Develop practical web development and digital problem-solving skills
  • Strengthen your mathematical, logical reasoning and computational thinking skills
  • Learn the fundamentals of cyber security or data analysis through your chosen pathway
  • Develop academic, communication and professional skills through the Aspire module
  • Gain practical experience using industry-relevant software, development environments and networking tools
  • Build confidence in teamwork, critical thinking and independent learning
  • Prepare to progress to Year 2 of BEng (Hons) Cyber Security or BSc (Hons) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

The programme has been developed to support students entering higher education while reflecting current industry practice and the growing demand for computing professionals across a wide range of sectors. It provides both a recognised higher education qualification and a clear progression route into honours-level study.
