About the course

Our MEd Education Studies is offered as a one-year full time face-to-face programme, taught over three trimesters. Intended for international students, it aims to develop highly knowledgeable and skilled practitioners with the capacity to function at an advanced level and lead enhancement projects within their workplace.

The course will enable you to build on existing knowledge and skills and to develop both academically, personally and professionally and prepare you to take positions of responsibility within your workplace.

The MEd has a strong international dimension with focus on relevant global developments in education and provides you with many opportunities to share practice and insights relating to the education systems of which you have experience.

You can exit with a generic award of MEd Education Studies or you can complete one of the specialisms available (see below for full details of each specialism):

  • MEd Education Studies (Inclusion)
  • MEd Education Studies (Leadership)

Specialisms

MEd Education Studies

This pathway is intended for teachers and other professionals working with learners in primary, secondary and tertiary education as well as practitioners working within other educational and training contexts. It is intended for professionals who wish to undertake modules across the named specialisms.

MEd Education Studies (Early Years)

This specialism is intended for teachers, senior leaders and other professionals working with learners in education or supporting colleagues in educational contexts. It will support professionals to develop applied knowledge and expertise in education in an Early Years context.

MEd Education Studies (Inclusion)

This specialism is intended for teachers and professionals who teach or support learning in mainstream schools or inclusive educational settings.

It will support professionals to develop applied knowledge and expertise in effective inclusive educational practices.

Course modules

This version of the MEd Education Studies is delivered over three trimesters on a one year, full-time basis.

There are three distinct exit stages: Postgraduate Certificate – PgCert – (60 credits), Postgraduate Diploma – PgDip – (additional 60 credits), and MEd (additional 60 credits).

Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)

You will study one core and two optional modules, which you will select based on your specialism and interests, to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert).

The PgCert comprises the following core module:

  • Critical Issues across Education (core, 20 credits)

After successfully completing the PgCert, you will proceed to the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip).

Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)

The PgDip comprises one further core module and two optional modules.

The PgDip comprises the following core module:

  • Educational Research (core, 20 credits)


The following list of optional modules are available across the PgCert and PgDip stages:

  • Inclusive Practice (optional, 20 credits)
  • Participation and Children’s Rights (optional, 20 credits)
  • Early Years’ Pedagogy (optional, 20 credits)
  • Leadership – Vision and Values (optional, 20 credits)
  • Working with Teams (optional, 20 credits)
 

Master of Education (MEd)

Successful completion of the PgDip allows you to proceed to the Masters module:

  • Masters Dissertation (60 credits)

What qualifications do you need?

We welcome UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

Don’t worry if your qualifications are not listed here, we take a range of factors into account when assessing your application and are happy to consider other alternative combinations of qualifications and experience.

You must satisfy one of the following criterion:

  • Possess a teaching qualification or early years equivalent
  • Possess a first (bachelor’s) degree in the broad area of education
  • Possess a first (bachelor’s) degree in another discipline but with substantial content relating to education
  • Have relevant work or professional experience or completion of an appropriate programme of study for which prior knowledge and skills have provided an appropriate foundation, including a compulsory element of independent work

 

Graduates of the UWS PGDE Primary or Secondary who gained SCQF Level 11 credits in the course of their PGDE will be able to enter the programme with advanced standing.

English language requirements

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission for both home/EU and international students for this programme:

  • Possess a teaching qualification or early years equivalent
  • Possess a first (bachelor’s) degree in the broad area of education
  • Possess a first (bachelor’s) degree in another discipline but with substantial content relating to education
  • Have relevant work or professional experience or completion of an appropriate programme of study for which prior knowledge and skills have provided an appropriate foundation, including a compulsory element of independent work

Common equivalent English language qualifications

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission for both home/EU and international students for this programme:

  • CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
  • CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English: ISEII with the minimum of a Pass in all sub-tests
  • PTE Pearson Academic English: An overall score of 54 with no element below 51 (for programmes that require IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5). An overall score of 61 with no element below 51 (for programmes that require IELTS 6.5 with no element below 6.0)

The course is of 1 year’s duration (full-time) and has intakes in Jan/May/Sept 2021.

A joint pre-sessional English/MBA option is also offered at £16,200.

At the time of writing, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) course fees for September 2021 may be subject to revision.
