Dr Jas Semrl

Lecturer

I am a lecturer at the Division of Computing, University of the West of Scotland, London campus. I obtained a PhD in 2023 from University College London (UCL) in 2023, part of the EPSRC Foundational Artificial Intelligence Centre for Doctoral Training and a member of the Programming Principles, Logic, and Verification (PPLV) group. Before that I completed my MEng in Computer Science at UCL in 2019.

My main research interests lie in the area of theoretical computer science and mathematics, namely in logic and algebra. I am active in my research in relation algebra and its applications, but my interests span further into other areas of classical logic, graph theory, and complexity/computability theory. Some of the problems that I am currently tackling are listed below, however, the list is by no means exhaustive.

  • Which relation algebra fragments have their representation classes finitely axiomatisable;
  • Which relation algebra fragments have the finite representation property for finite structures;
  • The representation classes of which relation algebra fragments form varieties;
  • Decidability of representability/finite representability/equational theories/… for fragments of relation algebra;
  • Demonic operators in relation algebra;
  • Weakening relation algebra;
  • Completeness of relational models for formal systems;
  • Applications of relation algebra to computing, for example, verification and artificial intelligence.
