Student Union

The Student Union works to represent students’ voice so that it can help the University make decisions which improve student’s experience. We also offer a number of services to assist students during their time at UWS:

Societies and Volunteering

You can join any society or create your own to reflect your own interests. This is a great way to make friends. We also provide volunteering opportunities – to allow you to gain experience, or to give something back to the community.

Welfare Support

Studying and juggling all other aspects of your life can be difficult and the Union offers an independent advice service to help you explore your options when things don’t go as planned. We also have events to improve your wellbeing – look out for the thera-pets near exam time!

Representation

Our volunteer student reps help us to represent your voice to the University. Each class will have at least one student rep and your lecturer will talk to you about this in your classes. If you’re interested in becoming a rep – talk to your Lecturer.

Social Events

We do provide events and entertainment – even at a distance. Check out our webpage for what’s on during Freshers! You can check out more information about these services at our website.

Get involved - UWS X TEG CLUB X DEMOLA

Demola is a global community of university students, organisations, and foresight experts, all driven by the desire to create impact with meaningful topics.

TEG Club is collaborating with Demola to offer UWS London Campus students the opportunity to take on challenging project studies that will shape them to be a future designer. By taking part in projects, students will be able to provide effective solutions to topic, challenge their methodology, and gain valuable connections.

Each project is 8 weeks long, and will require a combination of in-person at UWS London Campus and online attendance. By participating in Demola projects, students will gain benefits such as:

  • Work with a diverse team of fellow students and industry partners
  • Gain ability to identify meaningful information within the context of real world challenges
  • Hands-on experience and demonstrate creative confidence
  • Interdisciplinary teamwork experience
  • Ownership of project execution
  • Formal Demola certificate/token
  • Skills development opportunities

Personal Tutoring

During the Welcome and Induction Week, all students will be allocated a Personal Tutor. This is usually a lecturer from your course who can offer you support and guidance
with your studies. Your Personal Tutor will set up a meeting in the early part of your first term, and thereafter you should meet at least once per term and maintain regular communication.

It is important that you fully engage with your Personal Tutor, even when things are going well, as they can help you to make good decisions and to get the most out of your time at UWS. They can also assist if you have a problem with any aspect of your studies. If you do have any issues, you should contact your Personal Tutor as soon as possible rather than wait until your next scheduled meeting.

The Hub helps with any questions during your student journey at UWS. You can access The Hub from any of our Campuses, from home and also through an online portal. Counselling and Wellbeing

Sometimes life is difficult, and you may feel worried, stressed, or unhappy. This can affect your wellbeing and sometimes your studies too. The University Counselling and Wellbeing Team are here to help.

The University Counselling and Wellbeing Service offers a private place for you to get support and talk about anything that is troubling you. Our service is free, confidential, and available to all UWS students. You can talk to us about anything at all, no matter how big or small the issue. For example, you might want to talk about:

  • Adjusting to life in the UK
  • Family difficulties or concerns
  • Coping with stress
  • Your academic situation
  • Difficulties in relationships
  • Homesickness
  • Feeling depressed or anxious

Talking about problems or difficulties with someone you trust can be surprisingly helpful. You can get things off your chest, feel supported, and think about ways to handle your situation. This can help you to feel better and be more successful in the things that matter to you.

Confidentiality

In the University Counselling and Wellbeing Service, we follow strict confidentiality practices and do not share any of your information with anyone outside of the Counselling and Wellbeing Team (unless you, or someone else, is at risk of harm). You do not have to tell academic staff that you are attending the Counselling and Wellbeing Service, and it will not affect your academic record or grades in any way.

How to Contact Us

To speak with one of our counsellors, you need to make a Wellbeing Appointment. Wellbeing Appointments are arranged through the Hub and take place online (via TEAMS).

You can contact the Hub to make a Wellbeing Appointment via WhatsApp on 0141 848 3998, or via the Hub Portal at hub.uws.ac.uk.

You do not need to share any personal details with Hub staff – just let them know that you would like to make a Wellbeing Appointment. You will be offered a choice of dates and times for your appointment, usually within a few days of your enquiry.
